Program on Energy and Sustainable Development (PESD) at Stanford University. His research focuses on policy instruments to address climate change, the role of state-owned enterprises in fossil fuel production, and how to deliver energy to lowincome populations. Dr. Thurber co-edited and contributed to Oil and Governance, a major volume on national oil companies, and he is currently working on a book about global coal markets. He has written several academic articles about the opportunities and challenges of using commercial business models to distribute improved cookstoves and other energy and health products in developing countries. Dr. Thurber teaches a class (with co-author Frank Wolak) on ‘‘Energy Markets and Policy’’ in Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Mechanical Engineering (Thermosciences) and a B.S.E. from Princeton University in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with a certificate from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

Impact of Carbon Emission Regulatory Policies on the Electricity Market : A Simulation Study
With ever rising concerns regarding global warming and other dangerous effects of C0 2 , there had been efforts to reduce CO 2 emissions all around the world by adopting more efficient technologies and alternate green or carbon neutral fuels. However, these technologies require large investments and hence to make them economically viable there should be suitable incentives from the government i...
متن کاملSimulating the Interaction of a Renewable Portfolio Standard with Electricity and Carbon Markets
The authors ran a game-based simulation of an electric market with both an RPS and a cap-and-trade market greenhouse gas emissions allowances. High renewable energy shares reduced and shifted the output of therm units and pushed down both electricity and carbon pric The markets for renewable energy, carbon allowances, a spot and forward electricity interacted in complex wa that are relevant to ...
متن کاملDifferentially Private Local Electricity Markets
Privacy-preserving electricity markets have a key role in steering customers towards participation in local electricity markets by guarantying to protect their sensitive information. Moreover, these markets make it possible to statically release and share the market outputs for social good. This paper aims to design a market for local energy communities by implementing Differential Privacy (DP)...
متن کاملSimulating the Impact of a Carbon Market on the Electricity System in the Western U.S.A
This paper describes a computer simulation analysis of a cap and trade market to control carbon emissions in the western electricity system. The simulations indicate that a carbon market could lead to dramatic reductions in carbon emissions over the next two decades. The reduced emissions can be achieved with only half the increase in retail electricity rates that have been predicted for the na...
متن کاملThe Impact of Carbon Cap and Trade Regulation on Congested Electricity Market Equilibrium
Greenhouse gas regulation aimed at limiting the carbon emissions from the electric power industry will affect system operations and market outcomes. The impact and the efficacy of the regulatory policy depend on interactions of demand elasticity, transmission network, market structure, and strategic behavior of generators. This paper develops an equilibrium model of an oligopoly electricity mar...
